Dijon's old town is small enough to walk in an afternoon and dense enough to fill three days. The Palace of the Dukes anchors the centre; around it cluster the cathedral, two Gothic churches, the Beaux-Arts museum, half a dozen specialist museums, and a tangle of medieval streets lined with half-timbered houses and hôtels particuliers. A bronze owl carved on the side of Notre-Dame is the official symbol of the city; finding it is the first item on most visitors' lists.
