Caserne Maginot

Late-19th-century military barracks, namesake of the more famous defensive line

The Caserne Maginot in the western suburb of Thierville-sur-Meuse was one of several major barrack complexes built in the 1880s to garrison the strengthened Verdun fortress system. It served as French headquarters in 1916 and as US Army headquarters in both World Wars.

The barracks are still in use as French military property and not open to the public, but the exterior can be seen from the road and the name itself is a piece of history — André Maginot, the politician who gave the famous interwar Line its name, served as a sergeant here in 1916. About 15 minutes' walk from the centre.
