The Porte Chaussée is the surviving 14th-century gateway through the old city wall on the Meuse, a pair of round defensive towers flanking a passage that originally controlled river traffic into Verdun. The towers were built in 1380 and reinforced in the 16th century with a parapet between them.
It served as a prison in the 18th century. Today the gate is the symbol of the city and the start of the main pedestrian shopping street. Photograph it from the river bridge for the best framing.
