Monument à la Victoire

Stepped pyramid memorial above the riverbank with a knight at the top

The Monument à la Victoire, inaugurated in 1929, is the chief memorial of the city itself — distinct from the battlefield monuments outside town. A long flight of 73 stone steps rises from the Rue Mazel to a small pyramid topped by a granite knight, sword resting point-down between his feet, looking out over the Meuse.

Inside the crypt at the base, a Book of Honour records the names of the soldiers awarded the Croix de Guerre for the defence of Verdun. The climb up the steps gives the best view of the city's old centre.
