Germany's largest museum of cultural history, founded in 1852 and dedicated to art and culture of the German-speaking world from prehistory to the present. The sprawling collection covers toys, musical instruments, textiles, arms and armour, folk art, and works by Dürer, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Tilman Riemenschneider, and others. The building incorporates the remains of a 14th-century Carthusian abbey.
