Kirche St. Sebaldus

Nuremberg's oldest church with a bronze saint's tomb

Nuremberg's oldest church, built in Romanesque style between 1230 and 1273, then expanded twice: side naves and a Gothic choir in the 14th century, and the distinctive twin Gothic towers in the 15th. Several sculptures by Veit Stoss adorn the interior. The highlight is the Sebaldusgrab, a freestanding bronze shrine by Peter Vischer the Elder (completed 1519) that houses the relics of the city's patron saint. The shrine itself is a Renaissance masterwork — look for the tiny self-portrait of Vischer in his leather apron among the figures.

The church was heavily damaged in 1945 and carefully rebuilt. It stands just north of the Hauptmarkt, easy to combine with the castle and the Schoner Brunnen.
