Sonthofen

Allgau mountain town with gorge walks, waterfall paths, and Grunten foothill trails.

Europe > Germany > Bavaria > Sonthofen

Sonthofen is the practical mountain town of the upper Allgau: less polished than Oberstdorf, less famous than the royal-castle side of Bavaria, but close to real gorge, waterfall, and foothill walks. It sits where the Iller valley begins to tighten into the Alps, with the Grunten ridge rising to the north-east.

The town itself is not the reason to cross Germany. Its case is the set of day-sized anchors around it. Starzlachklamm is a narrow gorge with wet rock walls and a built trail. Erzgruben Erlebniswelt am Grunten gives the mountain a mining story, while Hinanger Wasserfall is an easy waterfall walk above the valley.

That makes Sonthofen a fair spare-day stop if you are already in the Allgau and want something more local than another big-name Alpine resort. Treat it as a base with good immediate anchors, not as a postcard old town.

Things to Do

Sonthofen's best sights sit just outside the centre: a gorge, a waterfall, and the old ore workings on the Grunten slopes. They are close enough to combine in a relaxed day if you have a car or are comfortable using local buses and paths.
