Bad Muskau

Saxon border spa town wrapped around the UNESCO-listed Muskau Park landscape garden

Bad Muskau is a small Saxon spa town on the Neisse River, right against the Polish border. The town itself is quiet, but it has one exceptional reason to come: Muskau Park, a cross-border landscape garden designed by Prince Hermann von Puckler-Muskau and now protected by UNESCO.

The park is the kind of place that rewards slow walking. Paths, meadows, bridges, water, and views were arranged to feel natural while being carefully staged, and the design spills across both Germany and Poland. Since the Schengen border is open, you can simply walk from one country to the other inside the same garden.

The restored New Castle gives the park its centre of gravity, while the narrow-gauge Muskau Forest Railway and the nearby Rakotzbrucke add enough variety for a full day. Bad Muskau is not a big destination, but the park is special enough to justify the detour.
