The Stadthaus on the Marktplatz is what Halle uses today as a civic ceremonial building; the original Rathaus that stood here was destroyed in World War II. The current building is a careful 1950s reconstruction in late-Gothic style, with stepped gables and decorative tracery on the windows.
It is not normally open to visitors, but the exterior is a key part of the Marktplatz ensemble and worth pausing for. Concerts and council meetings spill out into the square on summer evenings.
