Halle's zoo, called the Bergzoo because it climbs a hillside above the Saale, opened in 1901 on what had been Burg Reichardt's romantic landscape garden. The terrain — steep paths, rocky outcrops, and old trees — gives it more character than a flat zoo.
The collection is strong on big cats and primates. The walk to the top is rewarded with one of the better views of the city. A good half-day, especially with children.
