Alexandroupolis sits in the far northeast of Greece, close to Turkey and the Evros Delta. It is a port city first, not a polished resort, but that is part of its appeal: ferries to Samothrace, a long waterfront, Balkan borderland energy, and one of the country's most recognisable lighthouses.
The city is a practical base for a wider Thracian trip. In town, the lighthouse and the Ethnological Museum of Thrace give you a clear sense of place. Just outside town, the Evros Delta and the archaeological site of Mesimvria-Zone add wildlife and ancient history, both much stronger than the usual "stop on the way to Turkey" reputation suggests.
Alexandroupolis is best with a car, especially if you want the delta or the coastal archaeological sites. Without one, stay near the centre, walk the waterfront, and use the city as the ferry port for Samothrace.
