Basilica di Sant'Ubaldo

Hilltop basilica reached by cable car with valley views

Reached by the Funivia cable car from Via San Girolamo, the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo sits at 827 metres on Monte Ingino, looking out over the town and the valley. Inside, the body of St. Ubaldo — bishop of Gubbio in the 12th century and the man who led the town's defence against Perugia — lies in a glass reliquary. The three great wooden pillars used in the Corsa dei Ceri race are stored here between festivals. The cable car itself is an attraction: the open-sided gondolas look like bird cages and offer a vertiginous ride up the steep slope.
