Gubbio's Museo Civico occupies the Palazzo dei Consoli, the great medieval palace that dominates the town from Piazza Grande. The building alone would justify the visit: it is one of Umbria's most dramatic civic monuments, all stone confidence and steep views over the rooftops.
The museum's star exhibit is the set of Iguvine Tablets, bronze tablets inscribed in the ancient Umbrian language that are among the most important surviving documents from pre-Roman Italy. There are also paintings, ceramics, archaeological finds, and civic collections that tie Gubbio's medieval pride to its much older roots.
