Mount Ingino Christmas Tree

World's largest illuminated Christmas tree, lit each year on the mountain

Each year from 7 December to 10 January, Eugubini volunteers stretch 850 lights and seven kilometres of cable up the side of Monte Ingino to form a Christmas tree visible across the whole valley. It is 750 metres tall and 450 metres wide at the base, with a comet star of 200 more lights crowning the basilica at the top. Best seen from a distance — the Perugia-Gubbio road, or the viewpoint at La Lecceta, gives the full effect.

A short, perfect example of the kind of thing Eugubini will do.

A story
The tree was first switched on in 1981 by a group of local volunteers. Pope John Paul II lit the 1991 edition by remote control from the Vatican; Pope Benedict XVI did the same in 2011. It is in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest "Christmas tree".
