Kolašin is the main base for Bjelasica — a small mountain town (population about 2,700) at 954 metres on the Tara river, with a wooden-house Balkan-Alpine character that has mostly survived recent development. The centre is built around a single square (Trg Boraca) with a cluster of cafes, a small Orthodox church, a wartime memorial, and the regional tourist office.
Kolašin was a Partisan stronghold in WWII and the town was burned and rebuilt; the eastern outskirts have a few drab socialist-era apartment blocks, but the centre and the slopes above it are pleasant. Most visitors stay a night here either side of skiing or hiking. The municipal museum has a small ethnographic collection. About half a day is enough for the town itself.
