Radio Kootwijk is one of the strangest and most memorable sights on the Veluwe: a monumental concrete radio station standing in open heath and forest. Built for long-distance communication with the Dutch East Indies, the main transmitter hall looks almost like a secular cathedral dropped into the landscape.
The building and its surrounding settlement are now managed as heritage, and the remoteness is part of the experience. It works well as a cycling or walking excursion from Apeldoorn, especially for travelers interested in industrial architecture, twentieth-century history, or the wide, sandy landscapes of the Veluwe.
