Forum Groningen

Striking cultural centre with library, cinema, and rooftop terrace

The Forum is Groningen's most striking modern building — an angular ten-storey cube of stacked galleries, clad in grey stone, anchoring the east side of the Grote Markt. Inside is a public library, the new Storyworld comic museum, a cinema with five screens, an extension of the Groninger Museum, and a series of cafes that wind up to the roof.

It is free to enter and wander. The rooftop terrace, reachable by escalators and lifts, has the best free city view in Groningen — there's no need to climb the Martini Tower if you don't fancy the steps.

A story
The Forum opened in 2019 after years of construction delays, including a literal earthquake from a nearby gas field that forced a foundation redesign. Its top floor is open to the public for free and gives the highest accessible view in the city — a panorama of the medieval roofs, the Martini Tower, and the flat horizon stretching to the Wadden Sea.
