Goudkantoor

1635 Dutch Renaissance gem on the Waagstraat, now a restaurant

A small jewel of 17th-century Dutch Renaissance architecture tucked behind the City Hall on the Waagstraat. Built in 1635 as a tax-collection office, it was later used as a gold-assay office — hence the name "Gold Office". The richly decorated sandstone façade, framed with pilasters and topped by a stepped gable, escapes the war damage that flattened much of the surrounding square.

The building now houses a café and restaurant, which means you can step inside and see the interior without being a customer for long. It is one of the most photographed buildings in Groningen.
