Hortus Haren is a substantial botanical garden south of Groningen, large enough to feel like a proper half-day escape from the city. Its themed gardens, ponds, mature planting, and glasshouse areas give it more range than a simple municipal park.
The garden works best for travellers who like slow, seasonal sights: spring blossoms, summer borders, autumn colour, and sheltered indoor collections all change the visit. It is also a useful low-key option after Groningen's museums and student-filled streets.
