Eidfjord

Small Hardangerfjord village beneath mountain roads, waterfalls, and the Hardangervidda plateau.

Eidfjord sits at the innermost end of a branch of the Hardangerfjord, where steep green walls, waterfalls, and mountain roads press close around a small village. It is quiet when no cruise ship is in, suddenly busy when one arrives, and still one of the most dramatic gateways to the western edge of Hardangervidda National Park.

The essential excursion is up through Måbødalen to Vøringsfossen, one of Norway's great waterfalls. Along the way, the Hardangervidda Natursenter in Øvre Eidfjord gives useful context for the plateau, reindeer, and highland ecology above the fjord.

Eidfjord is not a large place, and that is part of its appeal. Use it for a night or two if you want fjord scenery without the bustle of bigger stops, or as a practical base before crossing the mountain road towards Geilo.
