Innlandet

Innlandet is the oldest of Kristiansund's four islands and the one that best survives from the pre-war city. While the 1940 German bombing destroyed most of the original wooden architecture on the other islands, parts of Innlandet escaped relatively intact, preserving a small cluster of nineteenth-century merchant buildings and warehouses along the waterfront. The Klippfiskmuseet is here, in one of those old warehouses, and a short walk along the quay gives a sense of what the trading harbour once looked like.

The island is connected to the rest of the city by the Sørsund Bridge but feels slightly separate — quieter, with a few galleries and craft workshops mixed in among the residential streets. The local sundbåt (harbour boat) also stops here; taking the ferry across rather than walking the bridge is both practical and a small pleasure.
