Sundbåten — The Harbour Ferry

The sundbåt is Kristiansund's small harbour ferry, connecting the islands of the town centre across the inner waterway. It has been running since 1876 and remains a working mode of transport for locals, not a tourist attraction — which makes it more interesting. The crossing takes only a few minutes but gives a different perspective on the town's island geography, with the functionalist church, the old Innlandet warehouses, and the modern harbour all visible at once from the water.

A single ticket costs around 35 NOK (2024); a day pass or multi-trip card makes sense if you are moving between islands repeatedly. The boats run frequently through the day. Take it at least once — the best short boat ride in any Norwegian city short of Bergen's ferry network.

A story
The sundbåt has been running continuously since 1876, making it one of the oldest regularly operated small ferry services in Norway. It survived the bombing of 1940 (the boats were in use evacuating civilians when the German planes arrived) and kept running through the reconstruction years. Today's vessels are modern, but the route is unchanged.
