Mariacka Street

Gothic amber street linking the waterfront to St Mary's Church

The most atmospheric street in the old town, running from the waterfront to the flank of St Mary's Church. The Gothic burgher houses have ornate stone porches — called przedprozja — jutting into the street, and most are now occupied by amber jewellers. It is pleasant at any time of day, but particularly so in the evening when the outdoor cafe tables fill and the church is lit from below. The amber on sale is genuine Baltic amber, not the Asian substitutes that flood markets elsewhere.
