European Solidarity Centre

World-class museum of the Solidarity movement's birth

Opened in 2014 on the site of the Lenin Shipyard where Solidarity was born, this museum is one of the finest in Poland. The permanent exhibition walks you through the history of the movement from the 1970 strikes through martial law, the Round Table negotiations, and the fall of communism — all told through original documents, photographs, film, and artefacts. The building itself, clad in rusting Corten steel, is deliberately industrial in reference to its setting.

A story
Gate No. 2 of the shipyard, where the striking workers posted their 21 demands in August 1980, still stands outside the museum. Lech Walesa signed the Gdansk Agreement at a table inside the shipyard — the table is on display, complete with the souvenir pen shaped like a portrait of Pope John Paul II that Walesa used to sign.
