Long Market (Dlugi Targ)

Gdansk's grand pedestrian centrepiece, rebuilt perfectly after wartime destruction

The centrepiece of the Royal Way, and one of the great urban spaces of northern Europe. A broad pedestrian street lined with meticulously rebuilt merchant houses in vivid colours — ochre, terracotta, deep red — leading to the Green Gate at the waterfront. At its centre stands the Neptune Fountain, the symbol of the city, and the Artus Court, where Gdansk's medieval merchants once gathered. The reconstruction after 1945 was so thorough that it is difficult to believe you are looking at buildings that are essentially 70 years old.
