Golden Gate

Renaissance gateway adorned with allegorical figures marking Gdansk's Royal Way

The western entrance to the Royal Way, rebuilt in its current Renaissance form in 1614. Two tiers of columns with allegorical figures on top — on the city side, figures representing Peace, Freedom, Wealth and Fame; on the other side, Prudence, Piety, Justice and Concord. The gate stands between the Prison Tower and the Torture Chamber, both of which now house small museums. From here Dluga Street — Long Street — stretches east through the heart of the old town.
