Litzmannstadt Ghetto

Former Lodz Jewish ghetto area, one of Nazi-occupied Europe's largest and longest-lasting ghettos.

The Litzmannstadt Ghetto was the Nazi name for the Lodz Ghetto, one of the largest ghettos in occupied Europe and one of the last to be liquidated. Unlike a single museum, the site is an area of the city: streets, surviving buildings, memorials, and the nearby Jewish Cemetery all carry parts of the story.

This is not sightseeing in the casual sense. Walk it with preparation, using a map or local historical route, and give the place the attention it deserves. Lodz's industrial history and Jewish history are inseparable here, and the ghetto remains one of the city's most serious historical landscapes.
