The Old Cemetery is one of the best places to read Łódź's complicated 19th-century city story in stone. Its Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox sections reflect the communities that built the industrial city: Polish, German, Russian, factory-owning, working-class, devout, ambitious, and often divided.
The monuments range from modest graves to elaborate family tombs. It is a quiet, atmospheric walk and a useful companion to the factory palaces and textile mills elsewhere in Łódź, because many of the same families and social worlds end up here.
