Orange Alternative Murals

Address Świdnicka Street area, Wrocław

A series of small painted murals across central Wrocław commemorate the Orange Alternative — the anti-communist underground movement that emerged in the city in the 1980s and used absurdist street theatre to mock the regime. Their most famous tactic was painting dwarves over censored anti-government graffiti; the city's modern bronze dwarves descend directly from this.

The most accessible Orange Alternative dwarf murals are on Świdnicka Street near the Hotel Wrocław. A small information plaque at the Papa Krasnal statue summarises the movement's history.

A story
In June 1987 the Orange Alternative organised a "Day of the Eve of October Revolution" parade through central Wrocław in which thousands of students in red caps marched in support of the Bolsheviks — a parody so absurd the police did not know whether to arrest them, and arrested most of them anyway. Footage shows officers chasing students dressed as Lenin through the streets while bemused pensioners looked on.
