Ovar

Atlantic Portuguese city known for tiled churches, azulejo facades, beaches, and carnival.

Ovar is a workaday city between Porto and Aveiro with a better visual identity than many larger stops. Its streets and churches show off azulejos with real confidence, from blue-and-white facades in the centre to the almost glowing tiled exterior of Válega's church.

The city makes most sense as a half-day or full-day detour for travellers who like Portuguese tilework. Start with the Igreja Matriz de São Cristóvão, follow the Passos de Ovar through the old centre, then head out to the Igreja Paroquial de Válega, the showpiece.

Ovar also has an Atlantic side. Praia do Furadouro gives the town beach, surf, and seafood energy, so the day does not have to be only chapels and tiles.
