Europe > Russia > Lalsk
Lalsk is a small, remote town in northern Kirov Oblast that feels more like the Russian North than the Volga region. Its reward is not comfort or easy access. It is the survival of an old trading town: baroque churches, half-ruined ensembles, merchant houses, and streets that still seem cut off from the 20th century's faster routes.
The town grew where northern trade routes met, then lost importance when railways passed it by. That misfortune preserved much of its character. Around 25 October Square, the Cathedral of the Resurrection, the Church of the Ascension, and the bell tower form the main ensemble; elsewhere, damaged churches and old wooden houses show the same mix of beauty and neglect.
Lalsk is only for travellers who enjoy difficult small places. If that is you, it offers a rare day of northern Russian architecture without crowds, shops, or much polish.
