Balcón del Mediterráneo

Clifftop lookout between the two beaches — best at sunset

The Balcón del Mediterráneo is the rocky headland that divides Levante and Poniente beaches, topped by a small park with a lookout terrace. It offers the best panoramic view of Benidorm — both beaches visible simultaneously, the bay arching below, and the cluster of skyscrapers rising behind that gives the town its unexpected Manhattan-on-the-sea appearance.

The headland is a five-minute walk from either beach and is always open. A church, La Mare de Déu del Sofriment, sits at the top, and the surrounding gardens have benches shaded by mature trees. This is a good place to escape the beach crowds for an hour. Come in the late afternoon when the light turns the water gold, and stay for the sunset if you are in Benidorm in winter.

A story
The headland where the Balcón sits was once the site of Benidorm's original castle, built in the 16th century to defend against Barbary pirate raids. The castle was demolished in the 1950s when the mayor Pedro Zaragoza Orts approved the town's transformation into a modern beach resort — a decision that made him internationally famous and extremely controversial among Spaniards.
