Ascona

Ticino lakeside town on Lake Maggiore, with palm-lined promenades and bohemian Monte Verità.

Ascona is Ticino at its most polished: a small town on Lake Maggiore with pastel houses, palm trees, café terraces, and a waterfront that feels closer to Italy than to Zurich. It is quieter and more graceful than neighbouring Locarno, which is exactly the point.

The old lanes run down to Piazza Giuseppe Motta, the lakeside promenade where most visits begin and end. Above town, Monte Verità adds a stranger, more interesting layer: an early 20th-century colony of artists, reformers, vegetarians, dancers, and free spirits who made this hill a European laboratory for alternative living.

Ascona works well as a base for slow days on Lake Maggiore. Boats run to the Brissago Islands, bikes roll easily towards Locarno, and summer brings JazzAscona, when the lakefront turns into an open-air music venue.

Guide

Getting There

By train and bus. Take the train to Locarno, then continue by local bus or taxi to Ascona. The ride is short, but in summer the road along the lake can be busy.

By boat. Seasonal boats on Lake Maggiore connect Ascona with Locarno, Brissago, and the Brissago Islands. They are slower than the bus and much more pleasant in good weather.

By car. From the Gotthard route, follow signs for Locarno and Ascona. Parking near the waterfront is limited; use signed car parks and walk into the old town.
