Verbier

High Valais ski resort on a sunny terrace above the Val de Bagnes and 4 Vallées terrain.

Verbier sits on a sun-drenched terrace high above the Val de Bagnes in the Swiss canton of Valais, facing a wall of four-thousand-metre peaks. It is one of Switzerland's premier ski resorts — and it knows it. The terrain is steep, varied, and vast, with the 4 Vallées network offering over 400 kilometres of runs stretching from gentle nursery slopes to the infamous Mont Fort glacier descent.

In winter, Verbier draws serious skiers and snowboarders chasing off-piste powder, long couloirs, and the kind of Alpine terrain that makes other resorts feel tame. The village itself buzzes with a cosmopolitan crowd — more London and Geneva than traditional Swiss hamlet. Expect good restaurants, lively après-ski bars, and prices to match.

Summer transforms the place entirely. The lifts stay open for hikers and mountain bikers, and the trails above the treeline are spectacular. The Verbier Festival brings world-class classical music to the mountains each July and August, an unlikely but wonderful combination of concert halls and cowbells.

The village is compact enough to walk, though the slopes sprawl. If you are looking for a quieter, cheaper base, the villages of Le Châble and Bruson in the valley below connect by gondola and offer a more local feel.
