Maggie Dickson's

Grassmarket pub named after the woman who survived her own hanging in 1724, reprieved by law

Address 92 Grassmarket, Edinburgh EH1 2JR

Named after Maggie Dickson, an Edinburgh fishwife hanged in the Grassmarket in 1724 who survived when the cart carrying her body away rattled over cobbles and revived her. Since hanging can only be carried out once under Scots law, she was freed — and lived another 40 years. The pub named in her honour is a solid neighbourhood local: reliable ales, reasonable food, and a location on the western end of the Grassmarket that catches the late afternoon sun.
