Big Nickel

A 9-metre-tall stainless-steel replica of a 1951 Canadian five-cent piece, standing on a low hill at the edge of Dynamic Earth. The world's largest coin in any reasonable sense of the term, and an unabashed monument to the mineral that built the city.

You can walk right up to it — there is no admission for the coin itself — and the wider grounds include other oversized coin replicas. Best visited together with Dynamic Earth, but worth a separate stop if you are just passing through and want a photo.

A story
The Big Nickel was almost never built — the city initially declined the proposal, and creator Ted Szilva ended up putting it up on private land. It opened in 1964 and has since become Sudbury's most photographed landmark, a Canadian symbol of how a city can lean into what it does.
