Onaping High Falls

The Onaping River falls 55 metres in a single drop, about 40 km northwest of downtown Sudbury inside the Onaping Falls part of Greater Sudbury. A short trail from the A.Y. Jackson Lookout leads to a wooden viewing platform with the most dramatic view; longer paths drop down to the river itself.

The site is also right on the edge of the Sudbury Basin meteorite impact crater, and the rock faces here are some of the best-exposed shatter cones in the world — geological evidence of the shockwave from the impact 1.85 billion years ago. Free, open year-round, and one of the easiest ways to escape the city into the bush.

A story
A. Y. Jackson, the Group of Seven painter, depicted the Onaping River and falls so often that the lookout above the falls is now named the A.Y. Jackson Lookout. He painted the area into his nineties.
