The Superstack is the unmissable element of Sudbury's skyline — a giant chimney rising from the Vale Copper Cliff smelter complex on the west side of the city. Visible from highways thirty kilometres away, it is the symbol of both Sudbury's industrial heritage and the environmental damage that, until the 1970s regreening programme, came with it.
The stack is on active industrial land and cannot be approached directly, but the best views are from the road into Copper Cliff, from the Big Nickel hill, and from anywhere south or east of the city centre. Demolition is ongoing; the height is dropping a few storeys a year, so see it while it is still standing.
