Atotonilco El Alto

Highland Jalisco tequila town known for Don Julio, Patron, and Los Altos agave country.

Atotonilco El Alto sits in the highlands east of Guadalajara, in the Los Altos side of Jalisco's tequila country. The town is closely tied to premium tequila: Don Julio began here, Patron has a large hacienda on the edge of town, and Siete Leguas still works with traditional methods that serious tequila drinkers care about.

This is not the polished tourist version of Tequila town. Atotonilco feels more local and more agricultural, with blue agave fields around the roads and a town centre anchored by the Parroquia San Miguel Arcangel. The Museo de la Estacion adds a small but useful local history stop, especially for the Cristero War period.

The distilleries are the main reason to come, but access varies. Some visits happen through organised Los Altos tequila tours rather than walk-up tastings, so plan ahead and ask exactly which producers are included. With a car or guide, Atotonilco makes a more specialist day than the main Tequila Valley route, and that is exactly why it is interesting.
