Mazunte

Small Oaxacan beach town shaped by turtle conservation, sunset cliffs, and slow Pacific days.

Mazunte is a small beach town on the Oaxacan coast, close to Zipolite but with a different centre of gravity. It has the slow rhythm of hammocks, yoga signs, seafood lunches, and dusty lanes, but its real story is the shift from turtle hunting to turtle conservation.

That story gives Mazunte more weight than a pretty beach village usually has. Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga anchors the town's conservation identity, while Punta Cometa is one of the coast's best sunset walks. The beaches are close together but distinct: Playa Rinconcito is the easy town beach, and Playa Mermejita feels wilder on the far side of the headland.

Mazunte is best taken slowly. Give it a day and you can see the essentials; give it two nights and the place starts to make more sense, especially early in the morning before the heat and at sunset when half the town walks west.
