Tecolutla

Veracruz beach town where the Tecolutla River meets Gulf mangroves and turtle-nesting sands.

Tecolutla is a small Gulf Coast town in northern Veracruz, where the Tecolutla River spreads into mangroves before meeting the sea. It is close enough to Mexico City to fill up during holidays, but outside those peaks it feels more like a working beach town than a polished resort.

The best reason to come is the mix of river, estuary and beach. Local boats leave from the riverfront for mangrove channels where herons, cormorants and other water birds work the shallows. The beach is long, warm and easy-going, with gentler surf than much of Mexico's Pacific coast.

Tecolutla also has one of Veracruz's more appealing conservation stories. From late spring into summer, the Vida Milenaria turtle camp protects nests and, when conditions allow, invites visitors to watch hatchlings reach the water. Add the little marine museum and a seafood lunch by the river, and Tecolutla is a good low-key day or overnight stop on the Costa Esmeralda.
