Callejón Jesús Te Ampare

Steep alley of painted colonial houses with one of Xalapa's most famous names

Half a block from the cathedral, the Callejón Jesús Te Ampare is a steep cobbled alley lined with low colonial houses painted in the typical Xalapa palette of mustard yellow, deep red, and indigo blue. It is the most photographed street in town — a vertical postcard of the colonial quarter — and a brief but essential walk if you are anywhere near the centre.

The lane connects Calle Diego Leño with Calle Allende and is just a hundred metres long; at the bottom it opens out near a small square with a couple of cafés and a fountain.

A story
The name — Jesus protect you — supposedly dates to colonial times when this lane was so steep and slippery that mule drivers crossed themselves before leading their animals down.
