Palacio de Gobierno

Seat of the Veracruz state government with a famous Mario Orozco Rivera mural inside

The Palacio de Gobierno occupies the long block on the south-east side of Parque Juárez, a sober nineteenth-century neoclassical block in pale stone. It is the seat of the Veracruz state government and you can usually walk into the central courtyard during business hours.

Inside the main stairwell is a wraparound mural by the Veracruz painter Mario Orozco Rivera, depicting the history of Veracruz from the Olmecs through the Conquest and the oil industry — a major work in its own right and very much in the muralist tradition. Free; bring ID for the security check.
