The Pinacoteca Diego Rivera is a small but well-curated art museum in the city centre, housed in a former colonial mansion near Parque Juarez. It holds a collection of Mexican modern and contemporary art including works by Diego Rivera (who was born in nearby Guanajuato but has strong Veracruz connections), along with paintings, prints, and sculpture by other 20th-century Mexican artists.
The museum is free on Sundays and a good complement to the Museo de Antropologia for anyone wanting to understand the range of Xalapa's cultural life. The building itself — a courtyard house with tiled floors and painted plaster walls — is attractive, and the smaller scale makes it easy to spend an hour without feeling overwhelmed.
