Civil Rights Memorial

A small but striking circular plaza in front of the Southern Poverty Law Center, designed by Maya Lin. Water flows over the names of forty-one people killed during the civil rights movement between 1954 and 1968 — the years bracketed by the Brown v. Board decision and King's assassination — and over a curving wall inscribed with King's biblical paraphrase.

It's a five-minute visit, but worth pairing with the SPLC's small adjacent Civil Rights Memorial Center, which expands on the stories of the people named on the disc.

A story
Maya Lin, who designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, accepted the commission because the founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center sent her a copy of Martin Luther King's 'I Have a Dream' speech with one phrase highlighted: 'until justice rolls down like waters.' The black granite disc and wall flow continuously with water that visitors are invited to touch.
