Court Square Fountain

The cast-iron fountain at the foot of Dexter Avenue is the natural orienting landmark of downtown Montgomery. Erected in 1885 on a centuries-old artesian well, it's topped by a bronze figure of Hebe, cup-bearer to the Greek gods.

This is the spot Rosa Parks boarded the bus on 1 December 1955. From here, Dexter Avenue runs straight uphill to the State Capitol — the same route the Selma marchers walked to in March 1965. Pause and orient yourself before tackling the museums.

A story
The fountain stands on top of an artesian well that the Alabama Native communities had used for centuries before white settlement. The site was also home to one of the largest slave markets in the Deep South in the mid-1800s — a state historical marker on the south side of the square acknowledges this directly.
