The Legacy Museum

The Equal Justice Initiative's companion piece to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice traces the through-line from slavery to mass incarceration. The 40,000-square-foot exhibit space takes you from the Atlantic slave trade through Reconstruction, the Jim Crow era, lynching, and the modern American prison system, organised as a single argument across rooms.

It is denser and more emotionally exhausting than the memorial; allow two to three hours and don't try to do both in a single half-day. Booking ahead online is essentially required — walk-up tickets sell out. A shuttle connects to the memorial.

A story
The museum is built on the site of a former warehouse where enslaved people were imprisoned before being sold at Montgomery's slave markets — the city had one of the largest domestic slave-trading operations in the South. The first room you enter shows holographic figures of enslaved people standing in their former cells.
