Southern Poverty Law Center

The SPLC has been suing hate groups, tracking extremism, and litigating civil-rights cases out of Montgomery since 1971. Its modernist black-glass headquarters at 400 Washington Avenue is closed to general visitors, but the adjacent Civil Rights Memorial Center is open as a small museum that expands on the names inscribed on Maya Lin's memorial outside.

The Memorial Center charges a small admission and runs about an hour. Combine it with the Maya Lin memorial in the same plaza.
