Governor Hunt's Tomb

Small white pyramid in Papago Park containing Arizona's first state governor

Address Papago Park, Phoenix, AZ 85008

A short walk uphill from one of the picnic ramadas in Papago Park brings you to a startling sight: a sixteen-foot white pyramid clad in glazed tile, glittering above the desert. This is the tomb of George W. P. Hunt, Arizona's first state governor, a populist labour ally who served seven terms between 1912 and 1933. He picked the spot himself and helped design the monument.

The view from the foot of the tomb is one of the better free panoramas in central Phoenix, stretching west to the downtown towers and south to South Mountain. The tomb is unlocked but the chambers themselves are sealed. It's a five-minute uphill walk from the lot, with no shade — bring water if you go in summer.

A story
George W. P. Hunt was elected Arizona's governor seven times — a state record — and asked to be buried in a glistening white pyramid because, he said, it would 'see the morning sun forever.' He, his wife, and several family members are interred inside.
