The Wrigley Mansion sits on a small hill above the Biltmore neighbourhood with a 360-degree view across the valley. William Wrigley Jr., who made his fortune selling chewing gum and once owned the Chicago Cubs, built it in 1932 as a winter retreat for his wife. Sixteen thousand square feet, 24 rooms, the lot. After decades of private ownership it was bought by the Halls of George Hormel & Co. heritage, restored, and turned into a restaurant and bar.

The kitchen serves lunch and dinner with the city's most expensive view; an upstairs bar called Jamie's runs cocktails and small plates with a less formal feel. Free tours of the public rooms run Tuesday through Saturday mornings — no reservation needed, just show up. The drive up is steep; valet at the top.

A story
William Wrigley Jr. built the mansion as a fiftieth-anniversary present for his wife Ada. They used it for less than a month a year and treated it as their 'little bungalow' — distinguishing it from their other homes on Catalina Island, in Pasadena, in Lake Geneva, and on Long Island.
